Background

Remember when you'd sing, just for the love of it?
And any joy it would bring...
Chris is the adopted son of Hereusoix and Zophina Bagneaux. He was named after his late uncle, Chrystophe, who died saving his biological mother from being killed by his biological father. His mother passed away during childbirth, and he was adopted on the spot by Zophina, who had been the conjurer presiding over the delivery. Her husband, Hereusoix, was the head of the (disgraced) Ishgardian House Bagneaux, making Chris his heir apparent.Chris was born and raised in Gridania by his loving parents, who were quite well-off and were able to provide him with whatever he wanted. He was enamored with music from a young age and dreamed of one day becoming a world-renowned bard. In pursuit of this goal, he left home at age 16 to go on a “tour” of Eorzea. This experience taught him that he still had much to learn, as he was adept at performing, but not at composing his own music—he found that he had nothing interesting to sing about. His tour lasted two years, after which it was brought to an end by the horrors of the Seventh Umbral Calamity. Chris was in Ul’dah when it occurred, dangerously close to the Carteneau Flats. In the aftermath, he could only think of returning home to Gridania. The roads were incredibly dangerous, and he was met with the bloody realities of the Calamity at every turn. He could not ignore the suffering all around him. Many times, he delayed his journey home to assist the survivors he encountered. Eventually, he ran into the contingent of the Twin Adder that had stayed behind to aid the injured, and he joined them in their relief efforts. He made it back to Gridania a month later. Thankfully, his family had survived unscathed. In the five years following the Calamity, Chris set aside his musical dreams and put himself to work as an adventurer. He felt this was the way he could do the most good—unbound by loyalties to any given organization. He made a name for himself in Gridania, eventually earning the trust of the Elder Seedseer. Chris was sent forth to the other city-states as an embassy of Gridania, and the rest is history…

Personality

Chris is kindhearted and passionate, but he is also intensely emotional—to the point where he has trouble controlling his emotions at times. This can lead to violent outbursts as easily as it can cause moments of impolite exuberance or bouts of deep depression. He also suffers from (self-imposed) insecurities regarding the legacies he carries and his own identity. Though he was named after his uncle, he refuses to go by Christophe, and insists on being called by his stage name. He feels like he cannot live up to the image he has created of Chrystophe - that of a true hero - and thinks himself unworthy of the name.Though he was adopted, Chris loves and is loved by his Elezen family. He extends this love to the friends he makes throughout his journey as the Warrior of Light, treating each of them like he would his own kin. In particular, he views the Leveilleur twins as his younger siblings and will do everything in his power to protect them.Chris is a notorious party animal with a drinking problem that ebbs and flows with his current state of mind, growing more severe in his darker moments. He’s prone to behaving recklessly and encouraging others to join him—particularly G’raha.Chris can be somewhat immature and is not at all book smart. What he lacks in intelligence, he makes up for in heart and devotion. Though he may not understand the complexities of a given situation, he always strives to contribute what he can and help in his own way.

Jobs

Chris has three canon jobs: Bard, Dark Knight, and White Mage. All MSQ is completed as Bard, as he considers this to be his primary vocation (and his most recognizable, as he is essentially a famous pop star).Chris is terrible at manipulating aether and, as such, is a horrible caster. Any magical skill he has comes from his intense emotions—from dynamis. While he spent most of his life unaware of his sensitivity to dynamis, it was the source of his emotional dysregulation. It also allows him, through sheer willpower, to perform the combat magicks of his chosen jobs.First and foremost, Chris is a Bard. He holds a strong belief in the inspirational power of music and has boundless passion for performing. After becoming the WoL, the ballads he composed about his adventures became wildly popular. Soon, he was a household name in Eorzea—not just for his heroics, but for his musical abilities.Chris moonlights as a Dark Knight, taking up a more protective role as he helps out other up-and-coming adventurers. But this is also one of his avenues of stress relief, allowing him to let out his more unstable emotions in a productive manner.Lastly, Chris was taught the basics of conjury at a young age by his mother. Though he is by no means skilled at it, he is favored by the elementals of the Black Shroud. With their support and the Soul Crystal of A-Towa-Cant, Chris is a perfectly serviceable healer in a pinch.

Relationships

Chris’ first and last serious romance was with Haurchefant Greystone, and this relationship would change his life forever.Chris and Haurchefant were true soulmates. They and their other shards are destined to find each other in every reflection. When Haurchefant was killed, Chris felt as though he lost a part of himself, and he would never completely be the same.He later tried and failed to commit to being in a relationship with Aymeric, as he believed he could not remain faithful to him. Since Haurchefant's death, he has not been able to feel romantic love as strongly. In lieu of this, he focuses on nurturing his platonic relationships. As of Dawntrail, Chris has a sort of “friends with benefits” relationship with G’raha, and he’s developed a budding interest in Erenville. For the most part, Chris goes from partner to partner freely, not even considering long-term romances. But that could change…

Fun Fact

Chris' IRL namesake is Bang Chan of Stray Kids, otherwise known as Christopher Bang 🐺

The Fallen House

Long before Chris was a twinkle in his father’s eye, his adoptive family still lived in Ishgard, respected as a lesser house of nobility. House Bagneaux had ties to House Haillenarte and often worked together with them.Chris’ adoptive father, Hereusoix, was an aspiring merchant. As such, he opposed Isghard’s isolationist policies and often pushed for more extensive trade with other nations. Ishgard was only willing to work with Gridania to a limited extent, so he threw himself into the business of their trade deals. Hereusoix was convinced that outside aid was the key to winning the Dragonsong War.Meanwhile, his younger brother, Chrystophe, joined the Temple Knights on the front lines. He followed in the footsteps of their grandfather, Livenfant, who the brothers loved dearly. Livenfant was quite the hero in his day, and he showered his grandsons with wild war stories and other tales of his adventures.Livenfant’s own son, Santfroid, was not so enamored with his father’s exploits. While Livenfant was off slaying Dravanians, his wife, Naulette, was busy with the duties of a noble. This left Livenfant alone for most of his childhood. He was raised by servants—some of whom were lowborn, and some of whom were not entirely sympathetic to the beliefs of the church. He was instilled with certain heretical ideas from a young age, but he kept his hands clean well into his old age. However, he was a lackluster father to his children. With no model for fatherhood, he was cold to Hereusoix and Chrystophe and mostly left their care to his wife, Aglianne, and their grandfather. As Hereusoix entered the business of imports and exports, he managed to join a few business trips to Gridania. During his time there, he met Ketrault Beaumont, an artisan merchant with a large family business. Eventually, Hereusoix was introduced to Ketrault’s daughter, a conjurer by the name of Zophina. The two fell for each other fast, and they were wed within a year. Their marriage was a symbol of Ishgardian/Gridanian cooperation, and Zophina would move to Ishgard to represent the foreign nation. Hereusoix hoped that this would open up his countrymen to the idea of foreign alliances.A few years after Hereusoix and Zophina were married, Livenfant was killed by heretics while out on a hunt with some of his veteran friends. It was a shocking tragedy, as the area of Coerthas they had been in was considered to be safe and well-patrolled. It was almost as if they had been told where he would be…This event inspired Chrystophe to go beyond what was expected of him—he became a Dragoon. His newfound hatred for the Dravanians carried him through the tortuous training, and he became one of the most skilled Dragoons in the army at a young age.Years passed, and Santfroid grew more discontent with his lot in life. This ultimately culminated in an act of high heresy—he turned himself into a dragon and took his own family hostage, threatening to do the same to them. It was a shock to everyone around him. They had seen him as an antisocial loner, but never as a heretic. Now, there was a dragon held up inside the Pillars. The rest of House Bagneaux were branded heretics by association. The Heaven’s Ward attempted to arrest Chrystophe in the field, but he narrowly escaped and made his way back to the city to save his family. He slew his own father and helped his surviving family to escape the city. They fled to Gridania, counting on Zophina’s family to shelter them. The Beaumonts welcomed them with open arms—Ketrault’s prior experiences with Hereusoix had shown him to be nothing but a good man. They did not believe the accusations of heresy levied against them, and they gladly allowed them to live on the Beaumont Estate in Gentry’s Ward.Hereusoix took up the family business with Ketrault and his own son Zauchaux, while Chrystophe lent his lance to the Wood Wailers. Though their house was disgraced and struck from the heights of Ishgardian society, they were able to live peacefully under the boughs of the Twelveswood.

The Rising Son

Before the brightest dawn comes the darkest night
Blood spilled on black soil
From the ashes of two parents, a son rises
Radiant, blinding
On one fateful day in Limsa Lominsa, the great and brutal pirate known as V’Kuba the Red chanced upon the tent of a fortune teller visiting the city. He was drunk and had nothing better to do with his time, so he sat down for a reading.Word of the fortune teller’s death spread like wildfire through the city. Of course, everyone knew who was responsible. Only one person would do such a thing. The news burned up the coast of Vylbrand, reaching the ears of those in Costa del Sol. It was not long before L’nara Jinh heard about what had happened, and she immediately understood that she was in danger, for she was pregnant with V’kuba’s child—a child she had tried to keep a secret from him.L’nara fled to the mainland. She tried to hide in Ul’dah, but the constant exchange of coin does not inspire trust, so she booked passage to the Black Shroud. Upon her arrival in Camp Tranquil, she chanced upon a Wood Wailer named Chrystophe who offered to escort her to the city after hearing her plight. Surely, he told her, the elementals would provide succor to a distressed mother such as herself. They had offered him and his family shelter many years prior. They began the trek north to Gridania. V’kuba, hot on their trail, decided not to tail them through the forests. He was not fond of being on land for so long, and he detested the creatures of the Shroud. Knowing that escorting a heavily pregnant woman would slow them down, he scored a ride on a cart to the city, bypassing L’nara and the Wood Wailer and beating them to the gates. There, he hid and waited for their arrival. At the critical moment, he struck.L’nara was badly wounded in the ensuing scuffle. As Chrystophe delivered a fatal blow to the pirate, skewering him on his lance, V’kuba raised his pistol and shot the Wood Wailer in the abdomen—a mortal wound.L’nara survived long enough to give birth to her son, but everything that had happened to her had taken a great toll on her body. She handed her child to the conjurer who had helped deliver him—Zophina Bagneaux—and asked her to take care of him.Chrystophe died while she was in labor. The gunshot had done too much damage to be repaired, even by the most skilled healers in Eorzea. Hereusoix, mourning the loss of his little brother, suggested to his wife that they name the newborn child after him.
